Brooks showed up to be our best man the night before our nuptials. After drinks and too much reminiscing, I ended up in bed with the wrong brother. To avoid the humiliation and the fact that I’d ruined all of our lives, I left Branch and the only family I’d ever known.
That’s where my story should have ended.
Two years, one beautiful little girl and an abusive marriage later, I was standing there staring at the man that would always hold my heart.
The only question was…
Would I give it to him
I’m Katy Michaels and this is my story.
The book starts out with Katy Michaels who grows up next door to twin brothers, Branch & Brooks Valentine. They both like her, but she has a special connection with Brooks. This changes when Branch and her begin to date in high school. Soon, Branch & Katy are the quintessential perfect couple. Or are they?
Eager to escape from having to watch his twin marry the woman he loves, Brooks joins the military only to reappear the day before Branch & Katy's wedding. By this point, Katy has all but confirmed she's always been in love with Brooks and she can no longer pretend to love Branch that way. After all, the Branch she fell in love with is no longer the Branch she's about to marry.
After a night of hot passion, Katy realizes she can never really be happy if her family hates her for sleeping with Brooks before her marriage to Branch without calling it off first, so she takes off leaving Brooks behind.
From there, she enters into a series of unfortunate life events and adventures that don't gloss over the butterfly effect of her decisions. No one is safe in the wake of these decisions and the person it hurts the most is the one person she loves more than anyone: her daughter, Brooks daughter.
The twists and turns in this book helps move the pace along quickly, ensuring the reader stays involved, keeps the story on point and doesn't shy away from the complications that arise from Katy's many decisions.
Yes, there were times you wanted to shake her and yell at her to stop being so stubborn and making things worse but in all those times she didn't come across as off-putting. For me, Ms. Foor's ability to introduce this level of drama with the various plot twists and still make Katy relatable is a boon to the story and the world she created and not one that's easily done.
The one thing I didn't like? How Katy felt responsible for her husband's actions. Like it was solely her fault he was an abusive drunk and her actions were the reason he had become worse. I think that was the only point I really didn't care for her but I realize everyone approaches and handles abuse differently and even though it did fit with her overly emotional character, I still wasn't a fan.
All, in all, I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to the next one!
